Low shear valves are the most efficient measure to enhance oil water separation

Norwegian Environmental Agency published the report for “Work towards the zero discharge to sea from offshore petroleum activities” (Norwegian text).

The goal of the continuous work in this area is to reduce discharges of oil and substances in produced water, which are harmful to the environment. The Environmental Agency conducted the survey among all operators on the Norwegian Continental Shelf to identify the most effective measures for reducing the harmful discharges to sea. According to the operators themselves, the most cost-efficient measure to reduce discharges of dispersed oil and/or chemicals is to install low shear valves. Implementation of the low shear valve upstream separators would lead to enlarged droplet size, increasing the separation efficiency and therefore reduce the oil content in the produced water, ultimately reducing the environmental impact factor (EIF).
